DO YOU HAVE A TOOTHACHE?

Posted by Dr. Christopherson Aug 06, 2017

Toothaches can appear at time. They can cause any level of pain, from very little pain to debilitating pain to make even speaking or moving your jaw excruciating. Here are some things to understand, and some things you can do to take care of a toothache.

Inside the root of your tooth is a substance called pulp, which contains your tooth’s nerve endings. A toothache is often caused by damage to these nerve endings. Tooth pain can be a sign that you have a cavity, abscess, or other dental emergency.

Not all “toothaches” are strictly linked to pain; they could be more visual. If you notice an abscess around a tooth, your pulp may be damaged. Rashes on your face, irregular chills, high fevers, and noticeable discharge are all common signs and symptoms of a toothache. If you feel your pulp may be infected or damaged, speak with your dentist as soon as possible to discuss possible signs of a dental emergency.

If you do feel pain, rinse your mouth out with warm water–not cold or hot. Then, carefully use an interdental cleaner, such as floss, to remove any food particles stuck between your teeth. If the pain continues, call your dentist immediately. DO NOT apply aspirin directly to the area, as this can burn and inflame your gum tissue. You may, however, take pain-relief medications according to proper medical direction.

If you continue to feel pain in the tooth even after taking pain-relieving medications, you may have damaged the pulp. This may also be the case if pain continues for more than 24 hours after a tooth has been removed. If this is the case, contact your dentist immediately.
